A few toys that were made in the Erie area sold recently on eBay. I know you’re thinking Marx toys from Louis Marx and Co but these pre-date that company. These were manufactured by Carter Toys. Carter Toys was located in Erie, Pa and operated from 1900-1920. They manufactured mostly tin toys, and were well known for their quality items. In 1920 the company was purchased by Marx, and became a part of the Louise Marx Toy empire. This particular item above was made by Carter, Pre-Marx era. He most likely was made between 1900-1910. Here’s the time line of Marx history. If you haven’t been to the Marx Toy Museum in Erie, stop by sometime. It’s open Friday to Sunday, 1-5 pm.
